THE MISSION

“EducaTion is the Most PowerFUL Weapon Which You Can Use to change the world”

A little bit about me:

My name is Priscilla Umana, and I’m originally from Stafford, Virginia. More than 20 years ago, I made Los Angeles my home, and I’m proud to be part of this diverse and vibrant community.

My passion for quality education began eight years ago when I became an Educational American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter. Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to work in dozens of schools throughout Los Angeles. This experience has given me firsthand insight into how educational systems and communities impact students, faculty, and staff.

I believe education is the foundation of our present and our future, and everyone deserves access to a quality education. We must reduce the barriers that prevent students from enrolling, staying in school, and reaching their goals. That means creating a stronger sense of community where students feel comfortable sharing what they need—whether it’s academic support, assistance with housing or food insecurity, or simply someone willing to listen.

The Los Angeles Community College District is the largest community college district in the country, serving an incredibly diverse community. As a trustee, I want to help strengthen that community by ensuring students, faculty, and staff feel seen, heard, valued, and supported. Together, we can create an environment where every student has the opportunity to succeed.

‍ ‍Priorities and Strategies if elected:

  • I believe a student should never have to choose between putting food on the table, keeping a roof over their head, and pursuing an education. For many students in Los Angeles, the cost of living creates barriers that can make staying enrolled and completing a degree much more difficult. Thats why AFFORDABILITY will be one of my biggest goals. As a trustee, I will continue working to make affordability and basic needs a priority throughout the Los Angeles Community College District. This means supporting the expansion of affordable student housing, food pantries, emergency assistance, transportation support, and other resources that help students remain in school and reach their educational goals.

  • I believe quality education should be accessible to every student, regardless of disability, language, financial circumstances, or personal challenges. As a trustee, I will work to identify and remove barriers that prevent students from enrolling, participating fully, and completing their education. My experience as an Educational American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter has shown me firsthand the importance of accessible communication, inclusive classrooms, and strong support services. I will advocate for resources that help every student feel welcomed, respected, supported, and empowered to succeed.

  • A strong college community is one where everyone feels they belong and has a voice in shaping their educational experience. I want to help create welcoming campuses where students feel comfortable asking for support, faculty and staff feel valued, and everyone can work together toward student success. I believe students thrive when they feel seen, heard, respected, and supported. As a trustee, I will work to strengthen the connection between students, faculty, and staff by listening to their concerns, understanding their experiences, and learning what they value most.
